Exploring media, I need your help!
In brainstorming my artefact, I have thought it to be very apt that it is presented or at least includes evidence of different media forms, for example; video and audio files. In this thinking I wanted to pilot creating my own 'showreel' as such, which I could use as a product to inform possible employers about myself for varying roles in media, but particularly presenting. This also comes at a time where I am finding opportunities arising for me to use this particular part of the project for employment purposes. After researching various established presenters I realise that for someone with little experience the compilation of a showreel will detail very differently in situations, knowledge and skills. It is this query that seems to be throwing a spanner in the works for me and, as it is my first time in creating a product like this I wanted to gain the opinions, experiences and advice from my SIG! I look forward to hearing from you all...

Hi Simone,
ReplyDeleteThe two examples of what I have seen / heard / read about working in the past are these:
1. The most funny, amateur yet different / unique idea. Remember that anyone can record themselves on You Tube nowadays and potentially send it into a T.V station. Sometimes this works. I cannot remember who or what, but I definitely remember a well-known presenter being interviewed and they played the V.T of his "audition" showreel. It was the most unprofessional video I've ever seen, but it worked because of the funny subject matter he'd chosen. He was himself and they liked what they saw alongside his humour.
It would obviously depend on what type of presenting you would like to get into...any ideas?
2. Equity has a facility where they can record you and edit into a showreel. Are you as member? If so, make sure you're on their email list and take a look at the website.
3. Spotlight may offer a similar service to Equity. Again, it may be worth checking out.
4. Do you need a manager / agent for this type of work? Would it help to have one specifically for presenting?
Sorry for the questions. This isn't my domain, but happy to share my thoughts..!
Let me know whether or not any of these suggestions help.
Best Wishes,
Jo
Hi Jo,
DeleteThankyou for your advice, they are all fantastic ideas. I definitely agree that creating something 'unique' is a very to capture attention. You don't need an agent for this type of work, well particularly at this early stage anyway. You are often only accepted onto their books once you have some experience to show them, so the initial 'home video' showreel is where it all starts!
Hi Simone,
ReplyDeleteI'm not an expert on presenting, but I know that not having a showreel is a big setback for me with screen work. So....I think if you can find a way to link your research to creating a reel for yourself, do it! It's kind of killing two birds with one stone I guess....and after all the BAPP course is all about our professional progression.
I'm not sure of your exact inquiry question, but I guess you'll just have to keep an eye that you are fulfilling the questions raised in the research. I know we've often been told to think about how our artefact could benefit others in our industry - how about you make a video about making your showreel, then it could culminate in the showreel itself, whilst also teaching others how to do it.
Just an idea....any use?
Hi Stephanie,
DeleteI completely agree, I think that any sub-section within the arts, be it acting, dance or presenting, having a showreel is very important. The more I am researching and understanding my findings I am starting to agree with you that I could possibly create a showreel for my artefact. Thankyou for your advice! How is everything with your inquiry?
Just to put my two pennies worth in.
ReplyDeleteYou absolutely need a showreel. A presenter friend of mine actually went to a company to create one. This idea is perfect for your artefact I think. However you need to make sure it's of the highest quality. There is a snobbery culture out there when it comes to showreels. I'm afraid not every can see through the poor quality and it can sometimes to more bad than good.
Have you thought much about how you might create it?
Ahmet
Hi Ahmet,
DeleteI completely agree with you, though having limited sources creating one of the 'highest quality' may be a struggle. I have managed to get in contact with a producer at the BBC who has provided me with some great advice so I'm trying to find a way to intertwine this information together with the success of networking!
How is everything with your inquiry?
Hi Simone
ReplyDeleteIs it something you could do at your workplace over a few weekends as they will have the required equipment? Almost like a documentary, giving insight into the behind the scenes and perhaps interviewing some of the guests.
Gemma
Hi Gemma,
DeleteThis is a great idea, however with Sky being such a massive corporation and working on one of the busiest days of the week this is a fairly unlikely situation. I have however managed to gain a great amount of advice from the team to aid me in putting my own together!
